Courgette Tromboncino Albenga if the name of this Italian heritage variety didn't make you want to have a go at growing this easy to grow veg than maybe the fact it looks so fun (like a trombone) and is also so versatile in the kitchen will!
Courgette Tromboncino Albenga can be picked when about 25cm long when they are light green in colour with a thin skin and creamy flesh inside, or allowed to grow on up to a metre when they begin to ripen to a light tan colour.
The outer skin will harden up and they can be then stored in a cool dry place into winter like a winter squash. The courgettes are used in recipes just like normal courgettes when small & young or like squashes when hardened off for winter.
Courgette Tromboncino Albenga is a climbing squash unlike most courgettes that are trailing. It produces tendrils that need to wind up and around a strong support system like a pergola or wigwam and a helping hand tying in the vines & courgettes will help support the very heavy and numerous fruits.
Picking some of the fruit when young will encourage more flowers and courgettes should be ready to harvest from late June til the October frosts. An amusing, decorative and very productive plant for the veg patch looks fantastic trailing up a pergola as the fruits hang down but also produces useful tasty courgettes & fantastic squashes for use in the cold winter months.

| How to Sow: |
Sow seeds vertically 1cm deep in a pot or tray of moist seed compost. Place in propagator/cover with glass, polythene bag until the seedlings appear (5-8 days). When the seedlings have 2/3 leaves transplant them into 2l pots and grow on for a few more weeks. Harden them off by putting outside during the day for 3/4 days. Plant out in mid - late May when the chance of frost has passed. Incorporate plenty of organic matter to feed the plant and help retain water. Keep well watered.Can also be grown in greenhouse soil provided it is very fertile and they are well watered or even in gro-bags or containers.

| How to Sow: |
Squashes are hungry feeders so to give them a good start outside, dig a hole 30cm square and fill with well rotted manure and cloche the area a week before direct sowing. Mound soil up and plant 2 seeds 2.5cm deep into the mound and cloche again until the seedlings grow. Remove the weaker seedling, and remove cloche a couple of weeks later. Seed will not germinate until the temperature is consistently above 13C. Keep well watered. Space plants 90cm apart, and 90cm apart in rows.
